MIAMI, Fla. (November 20, 2019) —
Inter Miami CF acquired five new players in the 2019 MLS Expansion Draft which took place the evening of November 19, 2019. The club marked the event by inviting members of its three official supporters groups, Southern Legion, The Siege Supporters Club and Vice City 1896 to join the event, in a ceremony which took place in the plaza of the club offices in Miami. Interest was so high that the event had to be capped at 600 RSVP’s.
A few minutes past the 5:30 p.m. ET start time, Paul McDonough announced that with the No. 1 pick in the Expansion Draft, Inter Miami selected defender Ben Sweat from New York City FC. Miami and fellow expansion side Nashville SC then alternated selections until each had selected five players from the available player pool.

“We’re excited about what we were able to accomplish with this draft,” said Inter Miami CF Sporting Director Paul McDonough. “We feel we are gaining momentum ahead of the 2020 season.”
Sweat, a Florida-native, spent the past three seasons in the Bronx. The 28-year-old left back made two U.S. Men’s National Team appearances in 2018, appearing against Colombia and Peru. Sweat previously played for Columbus Crew SC, the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the NASL, the Dayton Dutch Lions in the USL Championship, Reading United in USL League Two and VSI Tampa Bay FC in USL League Two.
Inter Miami’s second pick was 25-year-old Alvas Powell from FC Cincinnati. The Jamaican international defender spent one season in Cincinnati after six seasons with the Portland Timbers. In that time, he has registered six goals from his right back position. Powell has appeared 49 times for his native Jamaica, which has included appearances at the youth level. He was a member of the Reggae Boyz side that competed at the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Lee Nguyen was Miami’s third pick in the Expansion Draft. He was selected from Los Angeles Football Club, where he played for the past two seasons. The 33-year-old midfielder played seven seasons with the New England Revolution. At Foxborough, he was team captain and played in 191 regular season games, scored 51 goals and had 49 assists. He also has nine caps with U.S. Men’s National Team, including two in the 2007 Copa América. Nguyen was among the best players available in the expansion draft and arrives in Vice City with a wealth of MLS experience, having appeared in a total of 239 MLS games. In total, counting MLS postseason games, he scored 54 goals and had 58 assists. Nguyen began his professional career with PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie, the Dutch first division.
Inter Miami selected Luis Argudo from Columbus Crew SC with its fourth pick. The 23-year-old midfielder was a 2018 MLS SuperDraft selection by Columbus. In his two seasons with the team he appeared in 39 regular season games, making 16 starts and registering one goal and three assists.
Bryan Meredith, the Club’s last pick in the Expansion Draft, was selected from the Seattle Sounders. The 30-year-old goalkeeper has made 13 MLS appearances, starting in 11 of those games and keeping four clean sheets.
With the draft complete, Inter Miami CF had 14 players signed to its inaugural roster. In addition to owning Homegrown Player Rights for Drake Callender, who is currently playing with the University of California, Berkley, the Club also controls its first and fourth round picks in the SuperDraft. Inter Miami also has the No. 1 overall pick in Stage One of the 2019 MLS Re-Entry Draft.
